As is the case with most short films these days, “Apocalypse Pizza Video” is only really existent as a pitch for a feature film. It’s a small glimpse in to a humongous world and massive narrative that promises to be wide in scope should it ever become a feature film. Or a series. I’m not sure which. Some information I’ve read claims this film is part one in a series, while other sources claim it’s a “trailer” for the feature film the producers are trying to get funding for to make in to a feature film. None of that matter as I’m a complete sucker for any form of fiction that concerns the apocalypse and the film from Je Suis Bien Content is one of the most creative piece of post-apocalyptic cinema I’ve seen in a while.
After the end of the world has introduced itself in the form of the walking dead, and the humans have adjusted to it, of course there is going to be need for distractions. And there will still be people out there in need of pizza and entertainment. Enter Apocalypse Pizza Video who are given an order by a group of survivors holed up in the Eiffel tower, for a romantic movie and large pizza pie. Preparing their weaponry and hazardous waste outfits they ready their supplies and blast out in to the apocalyptic terrain overrun by hordes of the walking dead and show us how business gets done in the zombie world when there’s money to be made.
Filled with great animation and a wicked sense of morbid atmosphere, “Apocalypse Pizza Video” is a glimpse at a potentially excellent storyline in where the group is willing to risk life and limb just to deliver pizza to clients holed up in random shelters barricaded by zombies. And there’s Justin Bieber. “Apocalypse Pizza Video” is a great detour in to the aftermath of a zombie takeover with characters who have a lot of potential. I hope a feature film eventually gets made. With killer animation, a slick sense of horror, and some great characters, “Apocalypse Pizza Video” has a lot of potential to be a great series or feature film. Here’s hoping Je Suis Bien Content can gather funding to give us another installment of these Parisian apocalypse deliver people.
