Director Christian Anderson’s short horror film is a short I hope turns in to a feature film. I intend to buy it. And re-watch it. Every time I think there can’t be any new material mined from the horror hero gamut, someone always surprises me. “Hell’s Belles” is a fantastic short horror film about two ghost fighting babes named Adria and Helena.
They ride around in their tricked up hearse, bickering about sex, and find that they may have met their match. The duel personalities for the heroines are well explored with Adria playing the more rounded foil and heroine, while Helena is a likable spitfire who loves to flirt, but comes through when the chips are down. While riding in their hearse arguing about “fuck beds,” the girls end up in the middle of a crime scene where a young girl is being ravaged by a demon. After two hillbillies accidentally invoke a demon named Beleth, it’s now up to the girls to stop it once and for all.
The make up effects are superb as the demon Beleth is a menacing monster of an introductory villain and one that pvoes to be most threatening to the duo. The dialogue is fantastic as actresses Ariel Teal Toombs and Mayra Rodriguez sport a sharp chemistry that could prove brutally entertaining in a feature length format. “Hell’s Belles” is a damn good introduction to the unique universe of the Hell’s Belles, and I’d love to see these two demonic dolls go on random supernatural adventures, while trying to bed their clients. I look forward to more developments in Christian Ackerman’s supernatural battling babes and what new terrors they come across. There’s a lot of potential for a fantastic cult film as the performances are great, the writing is slick, and the concept leaves a lot of doors open for new avenues.
