Random (2015)

Random

Cindy Maples really has a clever film on her hands here that I hope storms festivals soon enough. I didn’t know what I was expecting with “Random, but surely enough I was happy with what resulted in the end. Maples is a very talented director with a skill for exposition and characterization, while also telling a story that’s quite gripping.

“Random” is set during the night after a big date between married couple Evin and Nancy. They spend their time recollecting on their night spent with one another as they celebrate their anniversary and we watch them basically reflect on their life. We’re able to see some well staged moments of love and romance between the pair of lovers as they spend time together, go on a magical date, and even make love. The cast does a fine job with the material here, really adding to the emotion of the piece.

Maples is able to inject considerable foreshadowing by injecting the film with black and white stark flashbacks with splashes of intricately placed red that seem to disrupt the inherent magic of the pillow talk. “Random” seems like only a taste of what Ms. Maples is capable of, and I hope to see more from her in the future. If you ever come across “Random,” be sure to give it a chance, you’ll be pleased and quite surprised by what Maples has to offer in such a short window.
