It’s pretty clear that director K” is ambitious and has aspirations to be so much bigger. Considering the budget and the limitations, “Kindred” is pretty fantastic and garners implications that could hopefully lead to a sequel sometime in the future. I was definitely sucked in to the world Nicholson and writer Josh Bryer unfolded for us and I just wanted to see more and where it was all leading.
Warrun is a cynical and very angry young man whose entire world view conflicts with his tribes ideas about other worlds and the larger universe before them. After battling with his sister and their elder uncle, Warrun’s world is rocked when the trio are abducted by actual aliens. The origins of said aliens are enigmatic, but director Nicholson unfolds the narrative and tosses out tidbits of their world rather than over explaining everything. In fact much of the film is silent and based around character actions that tell us a lot about these characters and what they’re enduring. Warrun’s sister is courageous enough to approach the aliens with peace, while Warrun jumps to the defensive.
We’re never quite sure what they’re intending, we just know that they have plans for the trio and it may not be all that sinister. Perhaps it’s just other individuals from another world exploring another species and opening up the scope for their own minds, which Warrun is influenced to do. The special effects are excellent, opening up a really unique setting that’s vibrant and yet terrifying all at once. I really like what director Nicholson and writer Josh Bryer put forth here, and I hope they’re able to bring more to the table in terms of science fiction, and protagonists that are exciting. This is definitely a big leap in to a larger genre pool that succeeds in excitement, interesting ideas, and in opening a door for a vast world I hope to see more of soon.
