Daredevil (2003)

jlWqDgyNow, first of all, I am a fan boy, for the record; and I love the Daredevil comic books; so when this came out in the theatres, I was foaming at the mouth. Daredevil is not a household name like Spider-Man or Superman, so it’s a challenge trying to make this appeal to a wide audience. Many people compare this to spider-man, and in a lot of ways, the marketing and advertising is almost identical, but it’s unfair to compare the two. Spider-man is a light fun action-packed romp, while Daredevil is more deep, complex, and incredible. I was rather upset at the casting choices for each of the characters, but I decided to give it a chance. I was breath taken by this movie. Ben Affleck is incredible as Matt Murdock. I’ll admit, I didn’t think he would do good to the role, but he was able to pull it off without flaw. Ben Affleck is great as the humble and often cold Matt Murdock.

Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood (2002)

This is based on the book by Rebecca Wells and was adapted into a mildly successful chick flick in the box-office. This easily disappeared but its hard to figure out why. I rather enjoyed this film. It’s a good movie about the bond between a mother and daughter and how you can never truly know your parents as much as you think you do. Sandra Bullock is great as Siddalee Walker, the angry and disgruntled woman who has a cross to bear with her mother and often exhibits the corky odd traits her mother does. She’s terrible in relationships because she fears she may take the same path as her mother did when she was younger.

Don't Say a Word (2001)

In the movie, Michael Douglas plays Dr. Nathan Conrad, a noted and great child psychologist who is called in by his friend to observe a young girl who holds mysterious information. Now Conrad’s daughter is held hostage by mysterious criminals who claim the girl from the institution holds pivotal information that is connected to them. Now he must rush against time and retrieve the information for the kidnappers before time runs out and his daughter is killed. I thought the entire mood of the movie is pretty good.

Deuces Wild (2002)

As sleek and visual as this movie is, it’s not one of the best gangster movies I’ve seen; It’s possibly the worst. We get a nonsensical, clichéd movie with a contrived plot and go-nowhere characters. First off, the cast, though big, is pretty useless. We have a paper thin love story between Renfro and Balk that is very reminiscent of “Romeo & Juliet” yet comes off as forced and seems too much like a plot device.

Domestic Disturbance (2001)

domestic-dist

At a running time of simply an hour and twenty-one minutes “Domestic Disturbance” speeds through its narratiuve, and never leaves times for suspense, tension, or even logic. If the director Harold Becker had added a half hour more to pad the story and fill in the gaps, there likely would’ve been some great stuff. But that’s only really wishful thinking as “Domestic Disturbance” seems to ride on the fact that it’s hopelessly silly and lacking in thrills. In a movie that casts as Vince Vaugn as its primary psychotic villain, it becomes plainly obvious that the studios just aren’t even trying.

Dark Asylum (2001)

daThe camp value in Gregory Gieras’ “Dark Asylum” is priceless and might have been able to stifle the fun but all things considered it only increases it. There’s the humorous opening as a cop car is chasing down a car with two surprise drivers, hear the screams and are led to a sewer where they find the Trasher’s lair. I was laughing at the notoriously bad acting by the police as they gave some incredibly humorous screams. I was in stitches as you could hear the horrible dubbing over the main character’s daughters voice. Despite all of that, this film has a potential to be a really good horror flick.
