Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy 2-Disc Collector's Edition (2010) (DVD)

R980KYhWhenever someone purports to make the ultimate of anything, there’s a good chance that nine times out of ten, there will not be anything remotely resembling ultimate about the product. The makers behind “Never Sleep Again” thankfully live up to their promise that “Never Sleep Again” is “The Ultimate Nightmare Documentary” not only because it is undoubtedly one of the best horror movie documentaries ever made, but it surely is the definitive look in to the Nightmare series that is not just the chronicling of the evolution of a bonafide horror icon, but of a studio that began as an independent film studio and worked its way in to becoming a corporate juggernaut that in a sense worked against what filmmaking was originally all for in the first place.

Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story (2007)

spinetinglerBack in 2007, I reviewed “Spine Tingler!” for the Slamdance Film Festival, a yearly event that’s much more entertaining and fulfilling than its counterpart Sundance. “Spine Tingler!” is quite possibly one of the best horror documentaries and film documentaries of all time ranking with “The Kid Stays in the Picture” and “The Shark is Still Working” as the account of a Hollywood mogul and his attempts to make filmmaking so much more fun not only for the man behind the camera, but for the folks watching in the audience.

Graphic Sexual Horror (2009): Special Edition (DVD)

In spite of what you may think of Brent, the founder of insex.com, the infamous bondage and torture website featuring gorgeous models being bound gagged and drowned, the man was prophetic in his use as the internet to engage users in anonymous guiltless sexual interaction that paved the way for reality shows, thousands of voyeur and fetish websites, and also helped streamline the concept of live feeds as we know it. “Graphic Sexual Horror” is a documentary that’s almost impossible to sit through. While I am someone who is fascinated with the darkest of sexual taboos, founder of insex.com, Brent, is an unabashed lover of S&M, Torture, and bondage, and takes great pride in depicting small filmed sequences involving women being tortured in some of the most horrific ways possible.

Paris, Not France (2008)

parisnotfranceI’m not one who gives a crap about tabloids at all. Occasionally I’ll skim over something by accident or watch something on television where I simply can not avoid it but otherwise I find no value in prying in to the lives of people who claim to have it hard when they really don’t. Take Paris Hilton, a young woman who is one of many people in Hollywood who have claimed their fame for doing absolutely nothing. But hey, she’s a victim too. Or at least that’s what this propaganda infomercial about Paris Hilton tries to convince us of.

Every Other Day is Halloween (2010) (DVD)

I was born around a time where television was beginning to change. Around the time where I was a kid, television was still all about local programming and whatever movies stations could dig up to fill the time slots, so my brother and I spent many days sitting down to watch horror movies that they just will not show anymore on local television. Many kids today have the internet at their fingers and can access whatever they want, but for people like me and people born much earlier, movies were an event, and one you stopped your day to focus on. Horror hosts died with the changing face of television and what with the censorship and corporate stranglehold of American television, all charm and enthusiasm has been lost in a sea of stale programming meant to sap dollars and not entertain.

March of the Penguins (Limited Edition Giftset) (DVD)

march-of-penguins-gift-guidejpg-39a8269aee290557_largeParents looking to experience the lifespan of a penguins with their kids would do best to realize that Luc Jacquet’s wildlife documentary is anything but a sugar coated film. What it really is is a gut wrenching and very realistic look at the plight of the penguins attempting to survive in the wilderness and what lengths they will go through to ensure the survival of their species in the midst of harsh weather, natural predators and genuinely difficult hurdles known as life and death. What is so special about “March of the Penguins” is that though it is intended for younger viewers it never sugarcoats the cruel reality of nature and how hard these animals have to work to live another day.

Religulous (2008)

religulousIt took me eighteen years to finally discover what a crock religion is. There it is, all of my explanation I feel I owe anyone who questions my belief system. While lampooning religion can be fun for only so long, “Religulous” is a film I think should be seen mainly because whether you like it or not spawns truths and puts the religious in the hot seat to discover what god and or religion is. What is god? How did he come to be? I’ve never a response without some sort of unsure rhetoric or descent in to the old clichés about his coming to be without ever providing a solid answer.
