Almost sixty years later, Jackie Gleason’s legendary spin off of “Cavalcade of Stars” popular comedy segment about a normal bus driver named Ralph Kramden seeking his riches and fame, while living with a long suffering wife endures and remains one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. It stands besides “I Love Lucy,” and “Gilligan’s Island,” as one of the most recognizable and beloved series that always manages to find its way on to television, in spite of the series being set during a time where the telephone was still a rare element of the average household. The reason why “The Honeymooners” continues to live on, is not just because of the fact that Ralph Kramden is a quintessential every man, but for the brilliant writing, excellent acting, and top notch comedy that packs a punch even today.

Mail-Order Mysteries: Delightful Treasures from Vintage Comic Book Ads [Hardcover]

Kirk Demarais takes a novel idea and turns it in to an original book about—well—novelties! I grew up an avid comic book reader, and in almost every comic book from the eighties I read, there was a humongous page of novelties, gadgets, and tricks that the company in the ads offered to buyers. These seemingly magical prizes ranged in prices of anywhere between five cents, to five dollars, tops. Often times, these massive ads could also be found in hobby magazines, youth oriented magazines, and their promises were huge.

Martial Arts Movie Marathon (The Skyhawk, The Manchu Boxer, The Dragon Tamers & The Association) (DVD)

Shout! Factory has been very good about compiling films that are otherwise tough to find, tough to acquire, and or not usually on these compilations. These DVD assemblies aren’t anything remotely new to the format, but Shout! takes advantage by bringing together four really interesting old school kung fu movies. While they’re not masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination, they’re solid mid-70’s terrain from Golden Harvest Studios that should peak the attention of even Blu-Ray converts.

Gamera: Legacy Collection 1965-1999 (DVD)

While Mill Creek Entertainment’s “Legacy Collection” for the Gamera series doesn’t offer every title from the Gamera saga, it definitely bones up on the necessities while also offering up some of the most contemporary Gamera adventures. The “Legacy Collection” features the first in the Gamera adventures from 1965, in which the giant turtle is awoken during nuclear testing from the ice, and begins wreaking havoc. Only a little boy sees the goodness in the snaggle toothed turtle. The sequel “Gamera vs. Barugon” sees Gamera return from his imprisonment in space to save Earth from the wrath of Barugon. Barugon can freeze people, but that’s okay since Gamera can breathe fire, and fly with the help of a rocket power shell, and whatever other powers the writers can concoct.

Gamera: Ultimate Collection – Volume 1 [Blu-Ray]

Mill Creek Entertainment brings Gamera to Blu-Ray in their original Japanese Cuts and titles, with Volume 1 of the “Gamera: Ultimate Collection.” Bringing the fourst four films of the Gamera saga, Volume 1 a great re-visiting of Daiei Film’s answer to Toho’s Godzilla. Gamera, unlike Godzilla, is a consistently changing big screen kaiju who is originally introduced as a gigantic menace who eventually becomes an intergalactic guardian. “Gamera: The Giant Monster (1965)” is the first film in the saga that is known by many for being spoofed on “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” On its own, it’s a solid giant monster film about a gargantuan fire breathing turtle with rocket packs in its shell, and abilities that seemingly pop out of nowhere whenever a sequel deems it convenient.
