Knights of Badassdom (2014) [Blu-Ray]

Hopefully someday we’ll be able to see the director’s cut of “Knights of Badassdom” as originally envisioned by Joe Lynch. Truth be told, he’s a very talented director, and I’d be more than willing to watch this again. Anything with Summer Glau gets a free pass by me. In its current state as the Producer’s Cut, “Knights of Badassdom” is still a great horror comedy that takes a bunch of LARPERs and drops them smack dab in the middle of a horrific situation involving a flesh eating demon with the face of a goddess.

Dead Shadows (2012) [Blu-ray]

Director Dave Cholewa’s “Dead Shadows” is HP Lovecraft meets “Night of the Comet,” and while surely that sounds like the ingredients for an amazing horror film, in the end it’s just a serviceable post apocalyptic horror thriller. It’s by no means a waste of time, but it never delivers on a lot of its ideas and story themes. Much of the concepts and sub-plots feel very under developed and half baked, with “Dead Shadows” unfolding in a very inexplicable series of events. I tried my best to follow along, but Cholewa really offers horror audiences a convoluted narrative for a movie that boils down to shooting aliens and monsters in the dark.

Scooby-Doo: Wrestlemania Mystery (2014) [DVD/Blu-ray/Digital]

The Scooby gang have come across almost every popular star since they were introduced on television. From the Harlem Globetrotters to Batman and Robin, no one was off limits to them. Surely enough with WWE ruling the sports world currently, their crossover with the Scooby gang was not only inevitable but it makes perfect sense, when you consider it. They met The Harlem Globetrotters. Mike Piazza. KISS. This was a long time coming.

Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales (2014) (DVD)

twisted-tales

A two and half hour anthology horror film? Come on, no one has such interesting stories that it needs a two and a half hour run time. The question is would you rather have a few excellent horror stories, or a lot of sub-par ones? If you answered the latter, “Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales” is the movie for you. Seemingly comprised of separate episodes of a series called “Twisted Tales,” they’re pasted together to form an awkward, often boring anthology horror film with no budget and no creativity.

Monsters: The Complete Series (DVD)

monsters

After spending years in bootleg limbo, horror fans finally can own all seventy two episodes of the 1980’s anthology series “Monsters.” We’ve made no secret of our love for the series in the past, and it’s great to finally see the series get its due on DVD. I’m sure a lot of Blu-Ray geeks are pining for their own editions, but for now, this set is a great step forward. Perhaps we’ll eventually see a Blu-Ray edition for fans down the line.

Beneath (2013) [Blu-Ray/DVD]

I’m usually very open to anything Larry Fessenden directs or appears in. The man has a very unique visual style and is never prone to offering typical horror or dramatic entries. “Beneath” is such a sad state of affairs, because director Fessenden is so much better than what “Beneath” offers horror fans. Fessenden’s horror films tend to be unsettling, uneasy, and eerie, but “Beneath” is a shrill and downright awful film from beginning to end.

Gravity (2013) [Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet]

While Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” is assuredly a film that will split audiences down the middle as to what its intent is, I’d dare say it’s a film for both fractions of audiences. While it is a movie somewhat based on spiritual themes, it’s also a perfectly fine film that the secular audience that is more fascinated in character themes and the inherent conflict faced by Sandra Bullock’s character Dr. Stone.
