One thing DC is really good at is providing us with animated movies that act as prologues and or inbetweenquels for their big budget movies and for the Green Lantern they’ve pulled out all the stops with a film that is something of a prologue. It’s not so much a prologue as it is a look at another day at the GL Corps, and “Emerald Knights” is an anthology of tales from the corps that isn’t just meant to give viewers a refresher course on the characters, but to give them an idea of what we’re looking at should “Green Lantern” potentially reach franchise status.

Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) (DVD)

While DC Comics may not have the box office power Marvel has (save “The Dark Knight”), or the volume in straight to DVD features, they have the quality that Marvel lacks whenever they decide to churn out a feature film on the home video circuit. DC has it all over Marvel when it comes to home video releases from “The New Frontier” to “Wonder Woman,” they have it all over their rival company. And just as the movie is being cast and brought to the big screen, we’re given a special glimpse in what could be with “Green Lantern: First Flight”! DC has been mostly hit on the Straight to DVD circuit and “First Flight” is proof that they just can’t be beaten when it comes to animated features.

DC Superheroes: The Filmation Adventures (DVD)

After many years without an official release, Filmation’s adaptation of DC’s greatest superheroes is finally on DVD with a pristine two disc edition featuring some of the most entertaining adventures of DC’s top tier and second tier characters. Primarily consisting of episodes from the Superman/Aquaman Hour, “DC Superheroes” is broken down in to numerous segment clusters that are comprised of episodes spotlighting the likes of The Atom, The Flash, Green Lantern, the Teen Titans and Hawkman, sadly with Superman only a glaring footnote in the compilation.

Justice League – The New Frontier (2008) (Two-Disc Special Edition DVD)

It was the Atomic age, it was the age of cynicism, is the age of optimism, it was the age of civil rights and feminism, yes folks, “Justice League: New Frontier” is not just a new frontier in its world, but a new frontier for the DC Animated Universe who for once approach a more adult Justice League with intellect, sophistication, and wonderful if startling glimpses at politics, racism, and military corruption. The folks behind the film vie for a more young adult approach by offering perspectives both psychological and social in these hero’s lives and dares to look behind the gods into the personalities.
