I XXXX My Sex Doll (2022) [CINEJOY 2023]

Since the rise of the demand for Sex dolls has increased, it’s been debated on whether or not they contribute to the decrease on sexual crimes committed by men. Whether or not they do, Director Fay Beck’s “I XXXX My Sex Doll” is a stark message that what ever the circumstances may be, a violent person will always be a violent person.

In an attempt to stamp out the ever increasing number of male on female violent acts, in 2030 the British government passed a law requiring that all male – female courting/dating be regulated by them, through a dating app. So far the effect on relationships has been devastating. The effect on violence remains to be seen.

Director Fay Beck’s “I XXXX My Sex Doll” is a very grim and sad message about the prominence of sexual assault committed on women, and how they tend to be victimized. The main character Guy, is a man who has increasing needs for his Model XXXX robot named Doll (played by Martina Avogadri), a busty submissive companion. Guy is simultaneously corresponding with a woman online through a series of coordinated trials that involve first chatting and then seeing her in person. Meanwhile, Doll becomes the brunt of Guy’s abuse, submitting to his degradation and then being tasked with becoming his literal punching bag during a sexual encounter.

Whether or not Guy is working out aggression is never quite stated, but it’s clear that he’s a man who shouldn’t be alone with an actual woman, let alone a robotic sexual companion. Director Beck ends the movie on a grim but ambiguous note as Guy prepares to meet the woman he’s been corresponding with, offering up the idea that perhaps he unleashed all his violence on Doll. Or maybe, just maybe, there’s a good chance he’ll carry that right in to his budding relationship. Director Fay Beck’s short is a brutal but necessary statement about sexual violence, and I hope more people find it.

CINEJOY featuring CINEQUEST Artists is held from March 1st through March 12th.
