The Walking Dead, Season One: Final Thoughts

The year of 2010 is the year that many hardcore fans of “The Walking Dead” were finally able to see their favorite comic book series come to life on the small screen with an incredible cast of actors. Free of clichés, free of science fiction doldrums and flash, fans who have stuck by the comic book series since the beginning were finally able to see their fantasies realized in an epic television series. And much like the comic book, every episode of the first season tested the fan’s devotions by completely twisting and mangling every sub-plot imaginable to the point where the band wagoners were shaken off and moved on to other things, while the true fans and new fans stuck by it.

Nothing Like the Holidays (2008)

NLTHTruth be told I’m not too surprised that “Nothing Like the Holidays” has become an obscure holiday film in spite of doing everything right in terms of holiday films. It’s called “Nothing like The Holidays” for a broader appeal, considering most Puerto Rican families celebrate Christmas strictly, and yet it’s still a shelf filler after its release in theaters because let’s face it, there’s not a Caucasian face among the cast. America loves the plight of the American family filled with blondes and brunettes while something like “Nothing Like the Holidays” which is essentially a film about a family trying to deal with their demons and unrequited emotions, is pushed to the wayside.

Bikini Bloodbath Christmas (2009)

2010 was a really rough year for yours truly so imagine my happiness when I learned that director Thomas Edward Seymour and Jon Gorman were ending the worst Christmas of my life with a Bikini Bloodbath. Finishing off their trilogy of trashy slashers, “Bikini Bloodbath Christmas” takes all of the good things about Christmas, destroys it, and instead trades it for a lot of booze, sexy women, bikinis, and a really evil chef Death who likes to kill people with a claw hammer… and stuff. Why is he killing people still? Who knows? But there are big boobs, sexy women and Debbie Rochon returns yet again.

The Big Lebowski: A XXX Parody (2010)

21The review of “The Big Lebowski” porn parody was a long time coming… no, I must keep going. Anyway, this review is long overdue for the simple fact that upon watching the PG-13 trailer for the porn parody of one of the greatest films of all time, I found myself mighty giddy at the prospect of a porn parody of the Coen Brothers film. Sure half of the time porn parodies are just lame excuses to grab money from consumers, but on other times, we get “The Big Lebowski a XXX Parody” a hilarious and inventive porn spoof that is 65 percent parody of the original films, and 35 percent hardcore porno. And I guarantee if you’ve seen the original films a thousand times over like I have, you’ll get a kick out of the subtle and not so subtle changes to the original film for porno consumers.

Kevin Smith: Cop Outs, Sycophants, and Self-Destruction

For The Record: This initial essay was prepared in early 2010 and held back in favor of many other articles, but in lieu of Kevin Smith’s new horror film, and the effect my thoughts on Smith had on my writing career of late, I feel this is an apt sign off for 2010, and feel free to offer your own rebuttals.

2010 has been a pretty historic year for movie buffs.

No I’m not talking about the release of “Iron Man 2” or the surge of 3D films, no 2010 will stand as the year that Kevin Smith officially lost his mind and self-destructed before our very eyes. The man who built a legacy on his love for comic books and his ability to create some of the most beloved indie comedies of all time while building a massive fan base of supporters has managed to completely destroy everything he’s set for himself in a matter of literal months. And it was quite astonishing to follow if you were been up to date on Smith’s activities online. I’ve hated mostly everything the man has made but even I couldn’t turn away from the display that is worthy of a reality show on VH1.

The Fighter (2010)

fighterI’ll admit I had little to no expectations for “The Fighter” primarily because the stylish trailers have made it feel almost like a clone of the Channing Tatum clunker “Fighting,” when in reality it’s truly an Oscar caliber drama about a man who has the potential to become a boxing legend, but cannot escape the clutches of a family who refuses to let him rise above their lower class pit of despair, regret, and broken dreams. “The Fighter” is based on the true story of Mickey Ward, a low level boxer out of Boston who dreams of becoming the legend his brother Dickey touts himself as.

Let Me In: Crossroads #1

Intent on following on its own path from the original film, Dark Horse releases the official prelude to the 2010 film “Let Me In,” an introduction four part comic book that takes the time out to remind us that this is its own beast but also very much like the story it takes from with this new version. And much like the remake currently in theaters, the prelude is about as dull as the live action narrative primarily because as a story about a vampire the entire atmosphere drains the life out of the reader from page one. Rambling and meandering, the entire comic takes so many pages of dialogue and drab art to set up the ultimate hook of the entire prelude which will lead in to Abby and Thomas moving in to the apartment tenement that leads Abby to meet Owen.
