Thirteen Conversations About One Thing (2002)

This is an interesting and profound drama, because this movie has one underlying theme that is relatable and universal: happiness. This movie has four separate characters whose life and tale seems to interconnect in some odd way. Matthew Mc Conaughey plays Troy, a hotshot lawyer with a triumphant swagger whose luck can’t seem to stop after putting a suspect in jail, and he has everything going for him, until he accidentally hits someone with his car and drives off to leave them to die. Slowly within the movie he descents into madness as his guilt has him take a mental plunge.

Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood (2002)

This is based on the book by Rebecca Wells and was adapted into a mildly successful chick flick in the box-office. This easily disappeared but its hard to figure out why. I rather enjoyed this film. It’s a good movie about the bond between a mother and daughter and how you can never truly know your parents as much as you think you do. Sandra Bullock is great as Siddalee Walker, the angry and disgruntled woman who has a cross to bear with her mother and often exhibits the corky odd traits her mother does. She’s terrible in relationships because she fears she may take the same path as her mother did when she was younger.

Sorority Boys (2002)

Three womanizing guys from K. O. K. are kicked out of the the fraternity after being accused of embezzling money from the house. They have proof that it wasn’t them by a surveillance tape, so they devise a plan. No, they don’t send a couple of girls in to get the tape for them, that would require brains, yet they dress up as women themselves to retrieve it, but soon learn it isn’t as easy as it looks. Homeless, they decide to pledge the sorority of D. O. G in desperate need of a place to stay, but learn a lesson in morals and discover what it feels like to be a woman.

Enough (2002)

“Enough” takes a serious and tragic topic like domestic abuse and exploits it, making idea of the crime something commercial with a very Hollywood narrative. I dare you to count the bruises and wounds inflicted on Lopez’s character and then add it to the years she suffered from the abuse, and it never quite adds up. Jennifer Lopez hams it up big time as protagonist and “heroine” Slim, attempting to depict the character as vulnerable, and even cuts her hair in a straight mop top to look like an average woman, when really it looks like a wig.

Queen of the Damned (2002)

Oh, boy, is this ever a doozy! This movie is unlike it’s predecessor. As where it’s predecessor gained an advantage with depth, drama, horror, and intrigue, this lacked greatly. First off, the cast is wretched with incredibly bad unknowns strewn about throughout the movie; we get cheesy special effects often throughout the movie as the vampires seem more like comic book characters than actual vampires. Lestat who was once made intimidating by Tom Cruise is now an arrogant sex fiend who growls and hisses at everything making him seem more comical than scary.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

The sequel to the 2001 blockbuster begins where the first one last left off as the hobbits Merry and Pippin have been taken hostage by an army of Orcs, Frodo and Samwise are on the track to Mount Doom to destroy the ring and the three warriors Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimley are tracking the orcs hoping to save the two captured hobbits. Frodo and Samwise are not alone, though. They have captured a fiend that has been tracking them for days; a fiend named Gollum; an ex-hobbit who became a creature from his obsession with the ring.

Swimfan (2002)

“Fatal Attraction”, as much as I dislike it, was very influential, and as all influential films do, has spawned up to, and over a hundred rip offs and wannabes including this pseudo modern take on the genre. As always, there’s nothing even remotely original to the material given in this, except for the comical ending which pretty much makes no sense. The characters in this film are all the same: there’s the main character, an average popular guy who has a lot to live for and foolishly squanders his life for a one night stand which means nothing to him, and a lot to the receiving partner, whom they know nothing about.
