Get In the Spirit for “Scream VI” with these Great NY Based Horror Films

Super Bowl Sunday saw the release of the newest trailer for the up and coming, highly anticipated sequel to the “Scream” series titled “Scream VI.” This new sequel takes the story out of Woodsboro and in to the streets of New York City. We follow sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter once again as they’re stalked by a meaner, more sadistic Ghost Face. In celebration of the New York bound sequel, I thought I’d list five great New York based horror films you can watch to prepare yourself for the highly anticipated sequel.

Sick (2023)

I think soon enough we’ll be at a point where the new generation of filmmakers will be making movies that reflect on the COVID pandemic and how it traumatized the world. The team of John Hyams, Kevin Williamson, and Katelyn Crab concoct what is easily one of the most clever slasher movies of the year, and yet another genre gem in what promises to be a year full of them. “Sick” is a movie that reflects on a COVID ravaged society that also explores ideas about self responsibility and how actions can have dire consequences.

Five Great Legacy Sequels

2022 saw the release of the long awaited “Top Gun: Maverick,” a movie that worked as a legacy sequel to the classic action film “Top Gun.” Despite long delays in its release and some bad press, “Top Gun: Maverick” earned great reviews, and a banging box office making it one of the highest grossing movies of the year. With “Top Gun: Maverick” paving the way to be considered a classic soon enough, it’s a great example of a legacy sequel. Here are five other great legacy sequels that I loved.

Pearl (2022)

I admit I was very skeptical about “Pearl.” I loved “X” but I didn’t think Ti West could do much with the film’s villain and the back story he intended. “Pearl” is a shocking horror film, one that takes a seemingly one dimensional tragic horror villain and put the spotlight on their story which ends up being quite emotional. Big credit goes to Mia Goth and Ti West, both of whom deliver on a disturbing and twisted horror drama that focuses on a young girl who explodes in a powder keg of body parts and corpses.

Five Great Films I Saw in 2022

Normally, this would be a top ten of 2022 after going through a wide variety of movies from the year. But in 2022, I spent five months in the hospital due to awful health complications that left me incapable of doing anything but lying in bed and hoping that I’d recover to full health. While on recovery I did my best to check out some anticipated movies, sadly with little success.

I was able to squeeze in viewings of a lot of movies upon my return home, though. While I wasn’t able to see much of anything in 2022, I was thankfully able to compile a reasonable top five list of great films I managed to find time for during the holidays. The list is subject to change upon viewing more 2022 films, but for now, I’m happy with this top five.

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: NEW YEAR’S EVIL (1980)

Today’s BAD MOVIE MONDAY column is about a film called NEW YEAR’S EVIL. It was released in 1980 and was directed by Emmett Alston. It stars Roz Kelly, Kip Niven, Grant Cramer and Chris Wallace. The film is a pretty good horror movie, but… is it a slasher? I’ve always said that from 1979 to about 1983 every horror movie was trying to force itself into the slasher subgenre, often with poor results, and NEW YEAR’S EVIL is the perfect example of a movie that feels like it was hastily rewritten to fit the trend. So you know what? Instead of a review, I’m going to answer the question of whether or not NEW YEAR’S EVIL is a Slasher Movie, and my answer will be definitive.

Kind of as my gift to everyone who bothers to read this silly little column.
