It’s often completely ignored or dismissed in the annals of Jim Carrey’s film career, but “Once Bitten” is one of my favorite of the Carrey comedy works. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it’s one of Carrey’s most restrained roles, where he’s funny without being over the top or rubbery as he was in his more successful films. “Once Bitten” is that eighties guilty pleasure I go back to again and again for a good chuckle. And to ponder the idea of being seduced by a vampiric Lauren Hutton. Either way, it’s all good.

Five Great Indie Filmmakers Suggest Five Great Films for the Halloween Season
Are you looking for a particular horror movie to watch for the month of October? For the Halloween season this year we spoke to five great indie filmmakers that have released some fine horror films recently, and asked them to suggest a horror film that they particularly find worthy of viewing for Samhain, be it so bad it’s good, infamous, or a masterpiece. These filmmakers currently working in independent film were kind enough to take time out of their busy schedules and recommend a title for our readers, so without further ado, five great films for the Halloween season as suggested by five Great Filmmakers.

Sexcula (1974) (DVD)
“Sexcula” is like one big acid trip. There’s no sense of narrative, tone, pacing, or any kind of semblance of story. The director doesn’t even seem to be working on any kind of script. Take for example the big show where a stripper (glimmering in a spotlight seemingly appearing from nowhere) begins dancing with the castle owner’s pet gorilla. The gorilla is so enticed by the dancing, he attacks and rapes the stripper, and out of revenge, she rapes the gorilla. The two then seemingly die during the revenge rape, and then they pop up taking a bow as the characters in the film applaud. It’s this kind of nonsense that makes “Sexcula” irritating, but oddly alluring. I’d call it erotic and sexy, but the movie is just too stupid to muster up any kind of that flavor.
Afflicted (2014)
Clif Prowse and Derek Lee’s “Afflicted” is a mix of “Innocent Blood,” and Cronenberg’s “The Fly,” with a hefty injection of “Chronicle.” It’s rife with cliches, predictable plot twists, and is about ten minutes too long. But in spite of all of that, I’d definitely suggest “Afflicted” to horror fans. Because while it’s retreaded horror fodder, it’s well directed, tightly edited, and solidly performed horror fodder to say the least. I knew what was coming, but I was also very much invested in the characters. I also really enjoyed the special effects.
George A. Romero’s Empire of the Dead
I’m just going to throw it out there without fearing a spoiler troll. So we find out in “Empire of the Dead” that doctor Penny Jones is indeed the little sister of Barbara and Johnny from “Night of the Living Dead.” So that would mean that they were named Barbara and Johnny Jones. And that the scenario that took place in 1968, really was present times. The world we gander upon in “Empire” is set in New York five years after the zombie apocalypse ensued, so, it’s 1973? Or is “Night” set in modern times? Which one is it? And what happened to Barbara after she survived Johnny dragging her away from the zombie horde? Do “Dawn of the Dead” and “Day of the Dead” just not count anymore? Does “Empire of the Dead” officially wipe them out of existence?
The Impaler (2013)
At eighty five minutes in length, if you took out thirty minutes from “The Impaler” you really wouldn’t notice anything missing. I’m not even kidding, what’s drawn out to a painful degree in eighty five minutes could be told in fifty minutes, and we wouldn’t be subjected to a lot of the alleged scares that occur. The movie is so bad that it rips off “Spellcaster,” and hilariously its budget is so low it can’t even rip off the cheesy effects involved with the haunted castle that ensue.

March 10th marked the seventeenth anniversary of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” the cult television series that continues living on through a humongous and devoted fan base that proudly celebrate the series to this day.
