Apparently “Storm” is something of a proof of concept as much as it is a short horror film and I have to say that I love where it’s headed. Director Lena Tsodykovskaya is a wonderful visual director who is capable of creating something of a really polished horror film. “Storm” is such a great meta-horror movie that I was sucked in from the opening. I don’t know if this concept can be stretched in to a ninety minute horror film, but for what it is “Storm” is a well realized and engaging horror film that smashes the fourth wall.

Shaky Shivers (2023)
One thing you can’t accuse Sung Kang’s horror comedy of being is boring. It might not re-invent the wheel in the realm of horror comedies, but it never is actually boring. Sung Kang manages to concoct what is basically a comedy about two best friends tested to their limits when one of the friends is wholly convinced that she might turn in to a werewolf very soon. Along the way there are so many hilarious incidents as well as events that seem to indicate director Kang was intent on throwing everything in their movie but the kitchen sink in its ninety minute run time.
Static Codes (2023)
After witnessing his wife being abducted by aliens and becoming paralyzed, a man finds solace in hosting an alien conspiracy podcast. Soon, things start to change, and he may just find his truth.
Fck’n Nuts (2022)
Director Sam Fox’s short horror comedy is a great commentary about growing up with a family that’s insane or just weird. For many of us growing up around parents and or family that are just mental in their own ways can be terrifying. It can especially be terrifying if you’re looking for friends or a potential romantic partner. Director and writer Sam Fox’s “Fck’n Nuts” is a great horror twist and excellent metaphor on having a nutty family. Fox’s short is obviously something of a sense of therapy in where much of “Fck’n Nuts” confronts the terror of trying to assimilate someone new in to such a crazy family.
Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film (2023)
I love a good fan film. On rare occasions they can offer up interesting ideas and concepts. “Dylan’s New Nightmare” is an ambitious and interesting fan film in that its concept works for and against the final film, in the end. While the whole concept of a follow up to “New Nightmare” is a good one, it’s problematic in that: it basically feels like a proof of concept for a sequel, and “New Nightmare” isn’t canonical to the rest of the series. With “New Nightmare,” Wes Craven was holding up a magnifying glass, stepping back to examine the overwhelming expectations and pains of success.
It was also not on the timeline of Freddy Krueger, as the monster in the film was not Freddy Krueger.
Apocalypse Clown (2023)
It’s not hard to figure out why “Apocalypse Clown” premiered to nothing but sell out shows in this year’s “Fantasia Film Festival.” Even after so many years watching so many unusual movies, I have never really seen anything like “Apocalypse Clown” before. And I doubt I ever will again. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing, as George Kane offers up such an original and surreal apocalyptic comedy. I was so confused but amused at what I’d been watching, as director and writer Kane opts to spotlight a movie that focuses on some of the most unlikely protagonists imaginable.
