Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters: The Complete Series (DVD)

It’s almost as if someone saw “Power Rangers” and how much money it was making and wrote a check for a hundred thousand dollars. They then told producers to raid every single prop and costume store in Los Angeles, as well as every left over prop in the nearest studio warehouse. From there, they had to cobble together their own “Power Rangers” show. What we inevitably got was “Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills.” Even the title screams “We made this shit up in a terrible time crunch.”

WINGS: Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (DVD)

81hLfAAAARL._SL1500_

“Wings” was always something of a show that had genuine laughs, talented cast members, and a recognizable sitcom formula, and sadly was never that notable. Even with the appearance of Norm and Cliff from “Cheers” to help usher in the series and its setting, “Wings” was always kind of an under the radar series for folks that appreciated more downbeat comedy. Which is not to say “Wings” is a bad show, it just never quite reaches its stride until the first few seasons pass.

The Butter Battle Book (1989)

bbb

Dr. Seuss was one of the few children’s authors who did much more than rhyme brilliantly and tell stories about the Who’s at Whoville celebrating Christmas. And even then when you thought he was just telling you a story about a village celebrating Christmas, he was more commenting on the consumerism of Christmas, and how these villagers didn’t need all the materialism behind it after all. Dr. Seuss spent a good portion of his life writing and drawing political cartoons and ninety percent of the iconic characters in his stories were originally born from his political cartoons and years later when he ventured in to telling stories to kids about Cats in Hats, he was telling us much more about himself and providing a moral.

Shame (2013)

shame

According to the epilogue of the film “Shame,” 53 percent of all domestic violence cases were reported by men. And yet we’re still living in a society where domestic abuse on males in intimate relationships are not only shrugged off, but aren’t even considered actual crimes by most people. Though society has built this idea that almost all domestic violence cases have been on women and children, men are often the abused that have to suffer through physical and mental abuse from their spouses.

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

SNF

In its own way director John Badham’s 1977 masterpiece “Saturday Night Fever” is dated in every imaginable way, but it’s because of that, that it’s a classic, and is very appreciated. And it’s also the swan song of a music fad that couldn’t have lasted. John Travolta really was a dynamo back in the days of his early career, with a trifecta of frenetic films like “Grease” which would come only a year later, and “Urban Cowboy” which made a real impact as a one of a kind film. What “Saturday Night Fever” is about, in its truest sense, is growing up. Get past the dated styles, and hair, and lingo and look deep down in to its narrative and you’ll find a truly excellent story about growing up and moving on leaving your childish things behind and starting a new life.

WNUF Halloween Special (2013) (Limited Edition VHS)

hqdefaultFrom Camp Motion Pictures comes one of the most niche found footage films ever made. While audiences can on some level connect with “V/H/S,” director Chris LaMartina dives head first in to nostalgia, with a horror movie very much for the eighties kids invested in the VHS resurgence. “WNUF Halloween Special” is very much a found footage film in the tradition of “Blair Witch Project” where all of what we see feels so genuine, the line between reality and fiction blurs.

Gingerdead Man Vs. Evil Bong (2013)

VIJ0WkbJSBiUNN_2_hd

After about thirty minutes of filler and scenes from the past films from both franchises, the basic premise of “Gingerdead Man Vs. Evil Bong” becomes Evil Bong playing heroine while Gingerdead Man is the villain. The main character from Evil Bong has opened up a bong store, while the surviving character from “Gingerdead Man” has opened up a popular bakery down the street.
