The Others (2001)

the_othersAlejandro Amenábar’s “The Others” is a surprise in a year filled with tepid, tripe we get over-hyped force-fed at the box-office. “The Others” is a very sophisticated anecdote of complex and well paced horror in a time where horror has plodded. The atmosphere and Gothic aesthetic feels like classic supernatural horror in the vein of Robert Wise’s “The Haunting,” with reliance on old school horror devices and unique elements of mystery and ambiguity rather than full CGI.

Shadow of the Vampire (2000)

The film starts off With F.W. Murnau filming his potential horror masterpiece “Nosferatu”. It tells how F.W. Murnau came to Bram Stoker’s wife for the rights to make “Dracula” into a movie. She rejects their offer so F.W. Murnau plays it smart. He changes the name of the movie from “Dracula” to “Nosferatu”, then he changes the name of the vampire from “Count Dracula” to “Count Orlock”. Dark Asylum (2001)

daThe camp value in Gregory Gieras’ “Dark Asylum” is priceless and might have been able to stifle the fun but all things considered it only increases it. There’s the humorous opening as a cop car is chasing down a car with two surprise drivers, hear the screams and are led to a sewer where they find the Trasher’s lair. I was laughing at the notoriously bad acting by the police as they gave some incredibly humorous screams. I was in stitches as you could hear the horrible dubbing over the main character’s daughters voice. Despite all of that, this film has a potential to be a really good horror flick.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Two very (and I emphasize the word) VERY stupid kids while on the way to spring break stumble upon a cave decorated with decayed bodies next to an abandoned church , but soon they begin to discover that there’s an evil demonic force behind it. Now the demonic force is after them and will stop at nothing to get what it wants. Every once in a while in a world full of rip-offs, cookie-cutter horrors, and timid supernatural movies passing itself off as horror, a movie comes along and spreads some light on the horror genre, once again renewing my interest and faith in the horror genre. This is one of those movies.

John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (2001)

ghosts_of_marsNow then, I’ll get straight to the main aspect of the movie that had my attention. The soundtrack. John Carpenter just has a knack for making innovative and creepy original soundtracks to these films. This soundtrack is kind of a hard rock guitar riff sound. The characters aren’t too shabby. The one that caught my attention most of the time was Natasha Henstridge who is s-o-o-o hot in this flick, especially when she’s kicking ass. Rapper Ice Cube is just great as the hardcore bull talking “Desolation” Williams, a sole prisoner who knows all about the aliens. He’s quick with the gun and manages to hold his own within this cast.
