I would have bet anyone a thousand dollars that 1972’s SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT directed by Theodore Gershuny had been renamed to its current title for a home video release around 1984 in order to cash in on the then new Silent Night, Deadly Night, and I would have lost that bet. “The film was given a limited release in the United States under the title Night of the Full Dark Moon through Cannon Films, beginning November 17, 1972. It was subsequently released as Silent Night, Bloody Night in the spring of 1973 and continued to screen under this title through December 1973.”

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: THE CHRISTMAS TREE (1991)
Today’s BAD MOVIE MONDAY entry is a doozy. So thankfully it’s under 50 minutes long. It is one of the worst and most baffling Christmas Specials I have ever seen. That it actually played on the USA Network blows my mind. THE CHRISTMAS TREE came out in 1991 and was directed by Flamarion Ferreira. A man who is right up there with Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini’s old chief test driver, when it comes to having a badass name that is guaranteed to get you laid. Joking aside, Ferraria actually has a huge resume and has worked on a truckload of various cartoons since the late seventies. I believe he’s still working today in fact. So, before I go on, I want to say that I respect the man. Yes, he’s credited as director for one of the worst movies ever, but he’s a working artist and this was a gig. I’m sure he’s a professional and did his best with what he had. When a studio gives you no time and no money and no resources to make “something”. Well… you’re gonna get what you’re gonna get. In this case they called the resulting abomination THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: THE STUFF (1985)
Some movies just stay with you forever no matter what. It’s not like you add them to a Top 10 or even a Top 50 list of your favorite movies, but yet you keep stumbling across it. THE STUFF is like that for me. I’ve seen it at least fifty times, probably more than that, but if you were to ask me why I watch it at least once a year I couldn’t really tell you. I didn’t seek it out at the time, I’m not even a big Larry D. Cohen fan. Yet here I am nearly forty years later still enjoying the hell out of this thing. It stars Michael Moriarty, Garrett Morris, Andrea Marcovicci, Paul Sorvino and Scott Bloom, and it was directed and written by Larry D. Cohen. Welcome to BAD MOVIE MONDAY!

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: PIECES (1982)
The word of the day, when choosing something for my friends and I to watch on BAD MOVIE MONDAY, has almost always been “agony”. However, on the particular night that we watched this movie I thought it’d probably healthier for their collective sanity to at least try to pick something that wasn’t gut wrenchingly awful. Hence, we watched 1982’s PIECES. Partially because it has Christopher George in it, who’s sort of become my own personal bad movie mascot, and also because no one else but me in the group had watched it and I thought it was a rather important film. It’s a quirky mix of Italian Giallo and American Slasher movie tropes, even though the film is Spanish. It’s also not a bad movie in any way. Let me be very clear about that. However, it has enough bonkers moments and questionable logic to be shown on a “bad” movie night.

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: DEATH BED – THE BED THAT EATS (1977)
It was inevitable that me and this film cross paths I suppose. Once you go looking for the devil you’re bound to find him. DEATH BED – THE BED THAT EATS is a 1977 movie directed by George Barry and starring Demene Hall, William Russ, Julie Ritter, Linda Bond and Patrick Spence-Thomas. The film is pure unadulterated madness, and I am so happy to say that it is the pure vision of a genuine auteur. Those always make for the best bad movies, because they are noble failures. So even if you make fun of them, as I do, you still love them and are invested in what you’re watching. I was more excited to watch this film than I ever could be for Avatar 2.

BAD MOVIE MONDAY: ACTION USA (1989)
Welcome back to BAD MOVIE MONDAY! Today I’m going to review something legendary. Well, legendary to me anyway. It’s called ACTION U.S.A. and stars Gregory Scott Cummins, William Hubbard Knight, Barri Murphy, Cameron Mitchell, William Smith and Ross Hagen. It was released in 1989 and directed by stuntman John Stewart. It was written by… Oh, who am I kidding? This movie wasn’t written. It was a teenager’s daydream that was doodled on the back of his algebra textbook during class and the filmmakers used that as a script. Seriously, this movie is bananas.
GOOD MOVIE MONDAY: SOLE SURVIVOR (1984)
Because today is Halloween, and because I make my own rules, I’m going to take a small break from talking about bad movies today and instead review a really good one. SOLE SURVIVOR is a supernatural horror movie directed by Thom Eberhardt. A name that may be familiar to fans of NIGHT OF THE COMET, another horror movie Eberhardt directed that is the far better known of the two.
