REASON FOR BOOTLEG STATUS: It no longer has any perceived value.

CHANCES OF SEEING A COMMERCIAL DVD RELEASE: Not likely.

When Matthew Perry passed away last Saturday, the obituaries and tributes focused heavily on his role as Chandler Bing in the NBC sitcom “Friends.” There was some mention of his other work, particularly his Emmy-nominated performances on “The West Wing,” his brief foray into film acting with forgettable flicks like “The Whole Nine Yards,” and his two-season reboot of “The Odd Couple.”

Skateboard: The Movie (1978)

Now in Limited Release in New York, and California; debuting November 10th in MN, November 15th at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, OH, November 26th at the The Texas Theater in Oak Cliff, TX, and December 9th/10th at the Cleveland Cinematheque in Cleveland, OH. Check Local Theater Listings.

I guess if you fancy yourself a completist, or have to watch every sports movie ever made, “Skateboard: The Movie” is a fascinating relic of a pretty great bygone era. It’s not at all a good movie per se, but I liked director George Gage’s movie for the way it works as a time capsule for the late seventies. It was a precursor to a lot of interesting concepts, including turning skateboarding in to a bonafide tournament sport, the way the media would inevitably drift over to skateboarding, as well as the whole attitude of the decade. The entirety of “Skateboard: The Movie” is punctuated by a lot of moog/synthesizer music, as well as a ton of pretty good pop rock music that lends it a real energy.

Blue Beetle (2023) [Blu-Ray/Digital]

Let’s face it, “Blue Beetle” just never stood a chance. Despite being adapted from a well liked reboot of a classic DC Comics character, any chance of a B tier superhero becoming a hit in the current film climate at Warner was slim. It just wasn’t in the cards, and that’s a shame because I think over time, “Blue Beetle” might just grow to become so much more appreciated and adored by fans.

Western Wednesdays: Wild Horse Phantom (1944)

SYNOPSIS:
Lawman Billy Carson [Buster Crabbe] orchestrates a plan that sees a band of prisoners, led by Link Daggett [Kermit Maynard] and Tom Hanlon [Robert Meredith], to escape from their confinement in search of a sizable amount of money, stolen from Piedmont County ranchers, they’ve hidden away. Hanlon has second thoughts about escaping with Daggett and his gang and starts to head back to prison only to be shot in the back by Daggett.
