Five Films We’re Anticipating for Fantasia Film Festival 2021

For yet another year, Cinema Crazed’s own Felix Vasquez and Emilie Black will be covering the Fantasia Film Festival, and this year the Festival celebrates 25 years. Going digital once again due to COVID restrictions, Fantasia Fest will continue from August 5th to August 25th with its usual line up of groundbreaking and original foreign, fantasy, horror and action films, as well as innovative short films and showcases from unique voices from film and pop culture from all over the world.

In anticipation of the coverage, we thought we’d list five films that we’re eagerly anticipating for this year’s line up! And if you’re attending the festival digitally, these are five we hope you check out.

Super Hot (2021)

I think it is possible that director Taylor King has created one of my favorite indie films of the year. I didn’t entirely know what to expect going in to “Super Hot” but it ends up being such a great horror comedy, despite some small flaws here and there. “Super Hot” has its inspirations close to its chest, combining “Booksmart” with “The Craft” to form this unusual amalgam that works shockingly well.

House of Wax (2005): Collector’s Edition [Blu-Ray]

Director Jaume Collet-Serra made his debut with a horror vehicle that was meant to basically cash in on the big tabloid sensation of the early aughts: Paris Hilton. According to most reports, “House of Wax” was built around her and the movie gladly doesn’t suffer for it. That’s mainly because Hilton’s on screen presence is so dull that she doesn’t overpower any of the cast, and “House of Wax” manages to power through as a fun, trashy slasher survival film when all is said and done.

Mortal Kombat (2021) [Blu-Ray/Digital]

Despite being one of the most violent games ever released (of its time), in the nineties studios worked hard to water down the series for a younger audience. With that, they effectively killed off any cinematic prospects for over twenty years after 1997’s embarrassing “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.” Now in 2021, Director Simon McQuoid brings us a new vision for “Mortal Kombat” that’s faithful in many respects, and embraces the gore and grue of the original games. It’s not a perfect movie by any stretch, but it’s a damn good martial arts fantasy when all is said and done.

5 Bugs Bunny Sports Films That Are Better Than ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

I know, I know, you are a Bugs Bunny fanatic but you just cannot bring yourself to spend money at a theater or on a streaming service to watch “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” Trust me, I’ve been there – I only wound up watching the original “Space Jam” on a rainy afternoon in an Atlanta hotel room when I was absent of ideas on how to kill a few hours between a business meeting and a dinner with a friend. (Message to self: bring a book or write a book instead of spending money on bad movies.)
