Director Mike Chester only has a minute to unfold a narrative, and wow what a narrative it is. I’m not sure yet if that’s a recommendation or caveat. I know for certain it’s an experimental film and one with great skill and creativity behind it, but I can’t make heads or tails of anything that happens within the sixty seconds given to the audience.

Repo Man (1984)
I sat watching Alex Cox’s “Repo Man” with a gaping mouth and sheer bewilderment from beginning to end. Director Cox assembles a slew of various sub-genres and sub-sub-genres, along with a seasoned cast of brilliant actors to concoct a surreal mind fuck that I was never bored by. In fact, I loved it right through to the very end. It’s existentialism, it’s social commentary, it’s punk rock, it’s action, it’s dark comedy, it’s comedy, it’s musical, it’s aliens, it’s crime, it’s a road trip movie, it’s a one of a kind anomaly with Emilio Estevez at his best.
The Days God Slept (2013)
I admit that I went in to “The Days God Slept” with no real idea of what it was about. And then when it ended I felt like I’d been sermonized, which left me with a cringe. It’s the all too familiar religious guilt aspect that bothered me, and really doesn’t mesh with the story of “The Days God Slept” too well. I really liked the idea of men building up the image of a stripper and or erotic performer and never quite allowing themselves to see the human beneath the image. But once the religious aspect is introduced, it’s completely lost.
The Witch (2013)
Director Jason Shurkey’s “The Witch” is light on story and narrative, but it’s a good student film, nevertheless. It garners some really tight editing and an atmosphere that make it a Gothic short horror film that’s very much worth experimenting with. Director Shurkey really knows how to develop a tone from the outset, and follows through with a surreal horror film.
Take It Back (2013)
Director Josef Rodriguez’s short horror film “Take it Back” feels more experimental than a narrative when all is said and done. Given its short run time and atmosphere, it could use a ton of exposition and about five more minutes of back story. That said, in spite of its inherent faults, Rodriguez is definitely on to something in the horror realm, as “Take it Back” is interesting and definitely creepy.
Saturday the 14th (2013)
What does your average run of the mill slasher do on his time off? Eventually your hockey masked slasher has to unwind and recharge right? Kristjan Lyngmo’s short animated film is rather genius, in that it not only features a hockey masked slasher, but one of a lineage of hockey masked slashers who divides his time between murdering hapless campers and coming home to deal with everyday problems.
Not in My Beans (2012)
I was kind of off put by the opening of director Grayson Whitehurst’s experimental thriller entitled “Not in My Beans,” but sticking with it really did pay off well. At only a little near five minutes long, “Not in My Beans” has a unique and very entertaining premise that’s dark, creepy, and surreal.
