Joe Bob Briggs is a well of horror knowledge, and in “Profoundly Disturbing,” he is filled with amazing stories about some of the most game changing films in movie history. He re-visits the grindhouse and the drive-in once again to profile some truly incredible and unique films. Rather than explain why the movies altered cinema, he also discusses interesting facts about their productions and the odd effects they had on pop culture. Did you know on “The Exorcist” that the actress who could projectile vomit sued the studio for not crediting her as the vomiter? Did you also know Ellen Burstyn had at least five different stage names before she was Ellen Burstyn?

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th (Blu-ray + DVD Combo)

Crystalblu

The team of 1428 Films is at it again, and this time they’re giving Jason Voorhees, the man behind the mask, his due. If folks loved “Never Sleep Again” and it’s extended run time, you’ll be glad to find out that “Crystal Lake Memories” is an exhaustive and lengthy documentary running almost seven hours. This allows for funny, wry, and honest looks in to every single installment of the series. Including the remake. With narration by series star Corey Feldman, “Crystal Lake Memories” traces the series back to when “Friday the 13th” began life as a low budget production at half a million dollars. Thanks to the introduction of Wes Craven’s “Last House on the Left” along with John Carpenter’s iconic “Halloween,” the creators set out to make their own mark with a holiday themed horror film.

Memoirs of a Gay Porn Critic

I’m a gay porn critic.

No, not really. I’m not gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I used to review porn, but that’s beside the point.

A long time ago I got in to a bit of a verbal war with their Asylum Entertainment’s most noted director who engaged in a back and forth with me for a long time, and even took exception to my bashing of his films on a major independent film website. Often I spent my days on another message board on my online haunts discussing the terrible movies coming from the Asylum, and often times I was inundated with attacks from people in the studios.

Dear Filmmakers, Stop Imitating Romero! or Why the Worst Movie of the Year Won't be in my Top 10

notldquadFor a while I kept 2013’s “Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection” on candidates for the worst movies of the year top ten for many months. I actually intended to brand it the worst movie at one point. But while it is the worst movie of the year, there’s simply no point in putting it in the top ten at all. It’s not because at its core it is a stupid independent film with a low budget, but because complaining about “Night of the Living Dead” wannabes is pointless at this period of film.

Five Reasons Hollywood Should Never Listen to Fans

I’m not saying Hollywood always knows what the hell they’re doing. But most of time their liberties can do good things for some franchises and properties. The “Lord of the Rings” movies are generally accepted in spite of the fact that they cut out whole characters, and invented sub-plots. And despite the authors hating them dearly, “Willy Wonka” and “Mary Poppins” ended up becoming iconic cinematic masterpieces. But then again we’ve also had “Daredevil,” “Batman & Robin,” “Green Lantern,” and “Elektra,” so you have to take the good with the bad.

Adaptations should be made with an appeal to the fan base and a broader audience, and though Hollywood needs to be called on their bullshit more times than not, listening to the fans for ideas is also a bad idea. It’s the worst idea possible. Fan boys should be given their fix, but never allowed behind the curtain to decide on the recipe. If so, we’ll have thirty fan boys going to war on including the Extended Universe in the new “Star Wars” movies, and arguing about who should play Green Lantern next. It’s an endless pool of petty, annoying shit. Placate them, but never give them power.
