Sidekick (2005)

I’ve been a comic book fan since I was a very small kid. Before I could read they were great to look at, and I’d have someone tell me their names, when I learned to read they were fun to dive into, even if I didn’t always understand the stories. When I became older, they were fun to read because the stories were so damn good depending on what comic you read, and when I became a man, I learned subtext, commentary, and undertones for the better, and I sought out deeper material. Either way, comic book fandom is a hobby that evolves over time, and de Graaf has the right idea of the love for comic books. There have been many an homage to the Superhero genre, but “Sidekick” is a completely different one altogether.

Security (2006)

Hey Hollywood, it’s me Felix. You don’t know me, and possibly don’t care, but have you ever bothered to look up the word comedy in the dictionary? While you’re out there making “Epic Movie,” and “Dance Movie,” and anything else that involves fart jokes, there are people out there making honestly good comedies with a budget of a little over a hundred bucks. And you know what? They’re funnier than anything you can shit out in your room of Yes men, and monkeys on typewriters. Take for example, the nut jobs at Bullcrank. I’m a fan. Yes, I admit it, and yes, they’re kind folk, but I laughed more in “Zombies in My Neighborhood,” and “Batman’s Gonna Get Shot…” than in any piece of crap you have ever come up with.

Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic (2005)

Jesus_is_MagicAt some point, within the tirade of racial jokes Silverman willingly passes, and within the admissions of peeing in her bed, and having unusual body hair, you have to wonder. If she was an ugly utterly huge woman, would we be okay with this? If a heavy woman went on stage and said “I pooed a little,” would we still laugh? It just seems that just because Sarah Silverman is basically good looking, it’s okay to say this stuff, and get out of jail free because—well, she’s hot. And in some way, she seems to know this, and that’s why instead of groaning, the audience simply laughs. I like Sarah Silverman. She’s funny, quick with the put downs, and is very pretty, but “Jesus is Magic” is an uneven balance of skits, musical numbers and stand up comedy, neither of which as uproarious as I would have wished and hoped for.

Sherrybaby (2006)

Sherrybaby_010Sherry Swanson is a child in a woman’s body. She’s petty, selfish, immature, completely void of anything resembling public etiquette, and is utterly self-deprecating. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, hates herself for it, and simply has no idea how to stop. Some viewers will be hard pressed to find some sort of sympathy for this character. She’s unlikable, despicable, and utterly obnoxious at times take for example her competing for her father’s attention with her own daughter. But she’s simply the result of a young girl who hasn’t been in the real world, a young woman who is still a baby that hasn’t received the proper help necessary. If there’s any help for her at all.

Fei ying (Silver Hawk) (2004)

silverhawkThe audience for “Silver Hawk,” will be split in two groups. One group will despise it for being the usual fluffy science fiction blockbuster malarkey, while the other group will enjoy it for the guilty action and camp. And you can’t really blame either for their thoughts. Michelle Yeoh’s actioner “Silver Hawk,” makes no bones about itself. It’s a really ridiculous and utterly moronic action film. You can see that by the fact that only within a minute the action begins without much preamble to recollect. Silver Hawk leaps over a bridge on her motorcycle and gets to work. Like a “Matrix” fan girl, Lulu Wong is a vigilante who, with her silver outfit, sneaks around stealthily, dons some odd sunglasses, and kicks the asses of anyone who dare confronts her during a mission.

Saw III (2006)

Well, it’s sad that a promising trilogy is now being announced as having almost five more installments added soon. Lions Gate has made no lies or double talk about this decision. The creators Whanel and Wan have proclaimed they’re dropping out of the further installments, but the studio and Tobin Bell are intent on continuing this franchise. Soon we’ll have “Saw: in Space”! Since the studio is intent on raping this series until it bleeds, “Saw III” is possibly the last good entry in an otherwise quality franchise.

Sasquatch Mountain (Devil on the Mountain) (2006)

sasquatch-mountainWant to make a monster movie but don’t have enough of the resources? It’s easy. Cast a cult actor for about five minutes, litter your film with nothing but character actors, and include a man in a monster suit draped in the shadows the entire time. “Sasquatch Mountain” is not a ride on Six Flags, but a pretty lame monster movie that I happened to catch on television recently. Shot in a rather annoying blue tint for the entire film, “Sasquatch Mountain” involves mercenaries, hillbilly hunters, a Blair Witch themed sub-plot, and Cerina Vincent as a hostage. I adore how these horror films try to include everything for everyone, and neither of the attempts is amusing.
