Serenity: Float Out

17163I would have killed to be in the audience of hardcore Browncoats as Wash led the Serenity through a swarm of deadly Reavers and land the ship within an inch of his life only to be impaled and die before our very eyes. I can only imagine the gasps and cries among the women as their favorite character died in a flash. Admittedly the “Firefly/Serenity” graphic novels and one-shots have been mixed. They range from mediocre to just plain abysmal, and leave it to nerd extraordinaire Patton Oswalt to take the reigns of the Whedon Universe and bring it down to its emotional core.

Superman/Batman Annual #4

As a big fan of the “Batman Beyond” series from the late nineties, I have to say that this fourth annual for the “Superman/Batman” comic series was a breath of fresh air and a wonderful re-visiting in to the old series with a more mature approach added. If you didn’t see the show you will have no idea what some of the references here are, but I caught on quickly.

I loved the fluid continuation from Terry McGinnis’ throwdown with Superman after being controlled by Starro, which has now turned him in to the only hero left. Superman has decided to quit fighting crime after his possession under Starro which has allowed Lex Luthor to conquer Metropolis once and for all.

Day of the Dead: Desertion

If Stefan Hutchinson and Robert Kirkman ever teamed up it would be such an unbridled wave of creativity, I don’t think my heart could take it. Current favorite writer Stefan Hutchinson continues his spree of paying homage to horror classics with “Day of the Dead: Desertion.” Meant as part-prequel/introduction to Romero’s “Day of the Dead,” this one shot is an attachment for the upcoming Blu-Ray special edition of “Day of the Dead,” and it is pure quality from page one.

The Top Ten "Kick Ass" Moments

Well, it’s coming, yet another superhero comic adaptation but thankfully this one is different. If you’ve never read it before, “Kick-Ass” is not so much about superheroes as it is about regular narcissistic everyday people putting on costumes and trying to fight crime and somehow finding themselves becoming real costumed superheroes when they just happen to crash in to a real life villain who wants them dead at all costs. There’s a violent karate fighting nine year old, a lot of really disgusting violence, and a storyline that is more realistic than most comic books tend to be. “Kick-Ass” does not stylize being a superhero. It’s rough to read.

Coming up on April 16th is the big screen version with an interesting cast who are threatening to take the box-office by storm and if you’ve ever seen the appealing trailers, you’ll know that we’re in for something quite spectacular. After reading the comic series a while ago, I thought it’d be good to pinpoint the top ten moments in “Kick-Ass” that particularly disturbed or excited us. Believe it or not, “Kick-Ass” is quite a good comic with a creator who managed to make history in comics by creating “Wanted,” another very violent comic turned in to a hit movie starring Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. “Kick-Ass” is a bit more conventional, but damn it looks quite good in spite of Millar’s apparent homophobia and penchant for racial stereotyping. So without further ado…

Warning, since the comic is somewhat similar to the movie, there will be potential spoilers.

Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic (DVD)

Was fame the key to their downfall?

Or perhaps the burden of upholding the laws and values of mankind were just too horrific to withstand to their psyche?

Or maybe, just maybe, they forgot that they were human and they just couldn’t manage to take care of folks too similar to themselves. Perhaps humanity continued to remind them that they were human themselves, and not very good ones. And those awful people were appointed with the task of watching over civilization, and inevitably corrupted.

The Walking Dead #54

And so we enter in to our new storyline involving three new characters and… I’m pleased. Thanks to pulling some strings with fellow comic freak Brian Pittman on Cinema crazed I was able to read Issue 54 without a problem and as stated, I’m pleased about where it’s going because the series was kind of in a rut when last we met our dwindling group of survivors. What will happen now that two survivors have showed up at the farm? Are they enemies or allies? And How far will ths struggle proved to go now that their xenophobia has provided the group with understandable but extremely paranoid situations?

Hackoween #1

Okay, so see if this makes sense to you: Cassie and Vlad, having been called in to the future by a mysterious being, find that Halloween Man is fighting a horde of the walking dead who I can assume were once superheroes. Cassie, finding no other recourse in defeating Halloween Man based on the info from a mysterious being they have no knowledge of, Cassie cores the zombie from the robotic armor that so happens to fit her, squeezes in to it and so happens to be able to operate the robotic machinery to take on Halloween Man.
