A few years ago, Warner Bros. announced plans to give “The Iron Giant” a new Blu-Ray release, and merely was content with stuffing the DVD port over to Blu. Director Brad Bird was not happy with the announcement and asked fans to demand so much better as “The Iron Giant” deserved a lot better than a mere DVD transfer. I was one of those fans that tweeted and asked Warner Bros. to give “The Iron Giant” much better treatment than a simple transfer. I’m happy a shortly after, Warner has allowed consumers the option of two special deluxe editions of “The Iron Giant,” and Brad Bird is able to give fans a bang up edition that is pretty much the ultimate realization of his masterpiece. Not only is director Bird able to deliver his film in High Definition, but he manages to add a few small scenes here and there to inject more nuance and character depth. These alterations work in favor of “The Iron Giant” adding a bit more dimension and length for folks that always hoped for an extended edition.

Sinful Cinema Series: The Abductors (Volume 1) [Paperback]
Combing the landscape of obscure cinema is tricky. It’s a journey that will often leave you with a lemon if you’re not careful. Author Doug Brunell’s reasoning for the “Sinful Cinema” book series makes a lot of sense as spotlighting certain movies that not many authors out there would be willing to spotlight is a neat idea. If you’re someone who wants to visit films that are completely out of the ordinary, author Doug Brunell seems intent on delivering spotlights for films you wouldn’t normally see discussed in most books about film. Sure, you can probably find summaries and brief essays about something like “The Abductors” in a review compilation, but author Brunell devotes an entire book to it. I’ve been a fan of Brunell’s since his days on Film Threat, so it’s fun to see him releasing a series of books for film lovers old and new.
Another Evil (2016) [FrightFest 2016]
An artist, his wife, and their son are spending some time in their vacation home when ghosts visit them. They decide to reach out to a specialist who doesn’t do much that helps. After this, another specialist is hired as recommended by a friend. As this new exorcist works on ridding them of the spirits, the wife and son go back to the city. At their vacation home, things take a turn for the weird, supernaturally and otherwise. Written and directed by Carson D. Mell, the film is more about the “industrial-grade exorcist” who comes into the house and brings his personal demons along.
Double Impact (1991)
In the long line of Van Damme action films, “Double Impact” has always been my favorite. Maybe it’s because of the fun premise, or the way the movie balances the green screen to almost be a convincing action movie about twins. I think it’s perhaps because Van Damme proves he can play vastly different characters.
Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (2016) [Blu-ray/DVD/Digital]
“Raiders!” is easily one of the best films of 2016. It’s a compelling and incredibly emotional tale of how one movie influenced a trio of young boys, and how that piece of art not only paved the road for their future, but also save them in many ways. What becomes incredibly evident throughout the duration of “Raiders!” that makes what unfolds before our eyes a truly gut wrenching journey is that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were men influenced by movies. Thanks to their love for serials and Westerns, they were motivated to make “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as a means of confronting their love for classic serial adventurers. After seeing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in theaters, young Eric Zala sought out to remake of “Raiders” but with teenagers in place of the adult actors.
Basket Case 3: The Progeny (1992) [Blu-Ray]
So Duane cracks after “Basket Case 2” which is kind of expected. Your mutated brother is finally getting laid by someone he connects with someone he was literally connected to, and the only girl you ever love dies after revealing she has a mutant living within her stomach—or something. The dam is bound to break. In either case, the gang is all back here and on full fledged crazy mode. Even Granny Ruth returns once more to lead the charge and fight for her mutant brothers and sisters to be accepted in to society. I mean… there are people with deformities that live perfectly normal lives, but okay. Everyone has to have a cause, I guess. Now that Belial has fallen in love with fellow mutant Eve, and has somewhat caused her to spring forth other deformed monsters, Duane is reserved as a sidekick of a sorts.
She’s Allergic to Cats (2016) [Fantasia International Film Festival 2016]
Life is hard in Hollywood for a budding filmmaker who works as a dog groomer to make ends meet. As he struggles to survive and get his career going, Mike Pinkney daydreams and makes experimental videos and meets the girl of his dreams. As he tries to get his future to be good, he struggles through work, with his dreams, with his rat infested apartment, his landlord, and his possible relationship.
