Disney keep their favorite little toys alive with yet another short adventure, this time in the vein of Halloween. While, it’s not a full length narrative, it does present the same stakes and personal back story that the three feature films have, and is an entertaining look in to the lives of the toys with their new owner Bonnie. After watching a horror movie while on the road with Bonnie, her mom and she stop at a local motel where Mr. Pricklepants is convinced horror awaits them.
With safety breeds complacency and unfortunately when we meet the survivors in “The Walking Dead” season four, not only have they built a world in the prison, but they’ve become complacent. Worse yet, Rick Grimes has now become complacent. Or so he’s told himself time and time again that the world outside has been somewhat dominated, thanks to their defeat of the Governor. They may have won the battle with the Governor, but the war has yet to end, and the group has yet to figure out what will happen if Phillip Blake returns in full force, prepared to slaughter the prison village.
I wish I had a nanny like Jennifer Stone when I was a kid. Not just because she’s hot, but also because she’s prone to delivering some scary stories for her charges before bed time. “Deadtime Stories” is the latest efforts by Nick (formerly Nickelodeon) to offer fans a horror show. While it’s no competitor for “Are you Afraid of the Dark?” the newest anthology does a good job of delivering “Goosebumps” level scares, and interesting stories. Sticking to the small budget, gone are the narrators of the undead or demonic variety and now most of the stories are told by Stone’s character, a devilish and somewhat enigmatic babysitter.
Back in the early aughts, remake fever was hitting pop culture like a mad rush, and even major television networks were getting in on remaking classic horror films. From “Helter Skelter,” to “Salem’s Lot,” no classic horror movie was off limits. 2002’s “Carrie” doesn’t just remake the Briand DePalma movie for a contemporary audience, but attempts to spin the entire story in to a potential television series for NBC. I’m not too sure what direction they would have taken Carrie in her own series. Perhaps she’d be an anti-hero, or someone who helped other troubled supernatural beings while traveling on the road with Sue Snell. Who knows?
What with eight seasons behind it, and a questionable season nine coming up, fans of “Supernatural” are still in heavy contention if the CW genre series is perhaps one of the greatest horror shows of all time. Maybe it’s one of the greatest of the network. You can debate on the merits of the argument and the series itself, and surely season six is the worst yet, but it’s managed to churn out some of the most memorable and terrifying moments in genre television. And what with the end of the Winchester clan potentially coming up to its ninth season, here are ten of the best “Supernatural” episodes of all time.
5. Party On, Garth
Season Seven
For season six and seven, the writers seemed to be given a task of filling the season with padding episodes. Thus it seems like they scrambled to find episodes that could stall the resolution of the arc and introduce monsters. But after Satan, and death, what else is there? Here, we meet the goofy Garth, introduced by name in “Weekend at Bobby’s.” DJ Qualls is a very underrated character actor who appears in huge shows like “Big Bang Theory,” and “Breaking Bad,” so he’s a guy who can play almost anyone.
You assume a movie about a killer scarecrow would be loads of fun, but “Scarecrow” starring Robin Dunne from the slightly entertaining Syfy series “Sanctuary” is only a passable bit of horror fare. It places little emphasis on the scarecrow, and more time on the characters. The scarecrow is a very stock horror character with no personality or real memorable moments. It takes a great talent to sap the frights from a scarecrow, and Sheldon Wilson’s film accomplishes just that.
