Hell hath no fury, as the saying goes, and the poor sap that crossed his woman, endures some of the worst punishment imaginable. Soon to be included as a compilation in a film called “World of Death,” Jeff Thompson’s horror film is a short but sweet tale of revenge through the classic voodoo doll.
Say Anything… (1989)
Truly, “Say Anything” is one of the most iconic romance movies of all time. It’s a last gasp of the eighties and in many ways a very touching tale of two people finding one another. But one of the best things about it is the final scene. Much in the way “The Graduate” ended, “Say Anything” puts our characters through the ringer, and then throws everything up in the air leaving it there for the audience to figure out what will happen next. Like Benjamin and Elaine in “The Graduate,” our young couple sits on a plane awaiting their fate and look at one another pondering on what the future holds.
High Bid (2014)
There’s a joke in this movie somewhere. I’m just not sure where. It’s not a bad movie by any means, but for a short film that identifies itself as a comedy, I kept wondering when the punch line would come. It’s a pretty good and well directed short film, but I’m still not sure what the joke for “High Bid” is, in the end. Is it the final scene? The preparation for the date? The mom’s oblivious tendency to help her daughter? Does the mom know about the daughter’s auction?
90’s Night In – 8-Movie Set (DVD)
For folks looking to re-live the nineties, Mill Creek Entertainment has made eight of the more notable and not so notable films from that decade available for folks craving overalls and ripped jeans. And there was that odd period where everyone was obsessed with swing dancing. What the hell was that about? Nonetheless, at over twelve hours long, Mill Creek offers eight dramedies of varying quality, and many of which are definite time capsules of the decade.

All hail the inanimate carbon rod! Homer is able to finagle a trip to space by NASA thanks to his usual bumbling and insanely good luck. NASA, just like every other organization, wants to attract public interest to their space launches (that are losing out to “A Connie Chung Christmas”), and decide to find an average man to go to space with them. Little does Homer know that they’ve picked him after he spends an unusual amount of time calling them to complain about their boring space launches. After a twist of fates, Barney becomes Homer’s competitor for the spot as an astronaut allowing for one of the wackiest and most memorable episodes of the series bar none.
Gotham City Serials – Batman/Batman And Robin: The Complete 1940s Movie Serials Collection (DVD)
It’s a good time to be a Batman fan. With another movie coming up, a new prequel series, and the Adam West Batman show finally coming to DVD this year, Mill Creek is wise to release the forties theatrical serials for Batman fans daring enough to venture in to the sketchy movie serials of the 1940’s. Don’t go in to this string of movie serials expecting modern Batman, or even Adam West Batman. It’s a very low budget adaptation of the Bill Finger character that also is heavily steeped in racial stereotypes. If you can consider the context of the serials, you may just enjoy the two disc DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment.
Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 (2014)
Stan Lee is asked by Archie Comics to create a comic book for them. Just his luck, Stan Lee runs across a group of Marvel clones that happen to be aliens from another galaxy with their own sets of powers and abilities. Stan Lee narrates the tale of Stan Lee in which Lee plays Stan Lee who is looking for an idea for a comic. Just his luck Stan Lee comes across the idea for his new series when he decides to help a bunch of space cops and their prisoners escape US authorities. Though Stan Lee plays himself as the main character, he’s really there to lend exposition to a clunky story, and inspire awe on the audience for a bunch of half baked heroes and villains.
