Batman Begins (Limited Edition Gift Set) (DVD) (2005)

98198I set aside everything I was doing when I received this for the simple fact that in spite of being a triple dip, in spite of being a cash grab for fans, in spite of marketing on our anticipation for “The Dark Knight,” this is a marvelous boxed set. Absolutely marvelous. And mind you, I’m a person who hates re-releases and avidly avoids them at every turn. I don’t care how many new features are on a re-release, I’ll avoid it if I’m set with my current DVD purchase. The Limited Edition Gift Set is fantastic, and I think I would love to see this for “Superman Returns” eventually.

Cage Rage: The Superstar Collection 5 Event Set (DVD)

cagerageWhat are you going to get in the three disc five event set of Rage Cage on DVD? You’ll get over twelve hours of MMA battles that feature some of the most brutal and exciting MMA fights for all you MMAniacs, and while normally I’m not much of a fan of this sport, it was almost impossible to pass up an opportunity to see what the big deal is. How can you not enjoy a sport that’s slowly pushing WWE to the side with the help of the UFC as the most popular sports in America?

American Zombie (2007) (DVD)

“Jesus was the original zombie.”

I guess zombie movies have reached the point where they’re basically self-consuming niche titles that have nothing new to offer. They’re either vague remakes of Romero, or vague remakes of “Shaun of the Dead” which is where “American Zombie” comes in. It’s a mock documentary that also tries to be social commentary, and more often than not it manages to work well as a tongue in cheek little satire on society and its fear of immigration and outsiders. Every society has to have a minority of individuals who choose a lifestyle that we have to chastise and condemn, and director Grace Lee takes an interesting step in exploring this collective action of a fearful society through the scope of the horror genre that turns zombies into a group of re-animated beings seeking to go about their lives in a world that has little room for them.

Hack/Slash #15 Featuring Re-Animator Part 1 of 3

514192-0000As if “Hack/Slash” didn’t have enough potential in the horror genre to be fixed to any of the slasher characters, creator Tim Seely and Devil’s Due are finally teaming her up with the unexpected but surprisingly apt Herbert West, a character who seems perfectly at home in this series. Especially when he manages to re-animate Cassie Hack’s mom/slasher The Lunch Lady. Ooh, he’s a bastard is what he is. I’ve been anxious to read this team-up since it was announced a few months ago, and part one of this three parter is finally here in thirty one pages of horrific glory.

Hancock (2008)

hancock-posterWhether it makes money or not, “Hancock” will not be the next superhero franchise to break the bank, nor will it be as anticipated as the action figures from Marvel. “Hancock” has so much potential in the first half to focus on a superhero who is far from the people we get in theaters who happen to be upscale and of the Caucasian persuasion, but the turn in the second half is probably some of the most nonsensical pro-feminist propaganda I’ve ever seen, with the writers anxiously working toward taking an insignificant and uninteresting character and turning them in to someone who could contribute.

Wall-E (2008)

“Wall-E” dares to be anything but predictable. It’s quiet, it’s subtle, it’s intelligent, it features barely any dialogue at all, and it asks us to think of a world where garbage has become so cumbersome we’ve been shoved off our planet by our own waste. “Wall-E” is simply a masterpiece. The Walking Dead #50

It’s here! It’s finally here! The seminal 50th issue of my favorite comic book series out now is here and wow, does it ever make good on its promise and hype! If the allusions to the first issue with Carl on the cover isn’t enough, we’re also given a wonderful variant that features all of the gang fighting the Gov and his crew… as superheroes! They’re bulky, they’re muscle bound and they have powers! Rick has a super fist, Michonne has a light saber, and Tyreese punches the head off of roamers with ease and giant fists.
