There’s having a hobby and then there’s having an obsession. One of the two can be very dangerous and eventually sink us in to a land of delusion that can affect the people around us. Ken and his girlfriend are at odds with one another after Ken agrees to meet with her parents for dinner. Unfortunately Ken is glued to watching one of his favorite zombie movies for the thousandth time, testing her patience.
If there’s ever a testament to the supernatural element of Halloween, it’s Alex Weight’s “Prank.” Set on Halloween night, director Weight examines what happens when a prank goes one step too far. And when evil plays a hand in pure utter revenge. Three trick or treaters dressed as a clown, a skull, and a devil meet up to go trick or treating for the night, and decide to pay an old friend named Jerry a visit.
I’m still waiting for someone to deliver on an epic fantasy horror movie where teddy bears defend their masters against monsters under the bed, or from the closet. Tyler Novo’s two minute short comes painfully close to the premise and I’d love to see more of it down the road.
I could kind of see where the film was headed in the first minutes, but that doesn’t mean “A Tricky Treat” isn’t worth a heap of praise. Director Patricia Chica delivers a fun and incredibly grotesque short film set to Halloween festivities that turn a classic ritual of the holiday on its ear. Or head as it were.
I agree with the zombies. Maggie Carr is incredibly charming, and very funny, which is a lethal combination. “Maggie vs. Evil Dead” is a hilarious and very good horror comedy starring Maggie Carr who plays herself. She is pitching herself for the new series “Ash vs. The Evil Dead” and uses this opportunity to show what she’s capable of.
It’s unusual that a sequel to a horror film would suddenly switch formats to an anthology, but horror anthologies are all the rage these days. What were once reserved for horror heavyweights like Romero, Savini, and Zemeckis, are now platforms for rising up and comers of the indie film world. I’m glad that these movies are allowing indie filmmakers to show off their short films, as there is a treasure trove of short horror films out there that almost never get seen by a wide audience. Thankfully you don’t have to see the first film to enjoy the sequel, since it basically bears no connections to the original narrative. This time, it’s an anthology of short horror segments with the recurring theme of ghosts and demons.
David Buchert and Chris St. Croix’s “In the Dark” is definitely one of the most tonally inconsistent anthology horror films I’ve seen in a long time. While it’s not a terrible trio of horror stories, it shifting tones and mediocre scares won’t elicit a huge fan base. That’s a shame, since “In the Dark” sports a really good opening introduction and wrap around sub-plot. In the wave of anthologies hitting VOD, I’d place this in the mediocre category. Set during a night time robbery, two sisters, who also happen to be maniacal killers, hide out in a hotel awaiting a rendezvous with their boss. While they wait, they sit around and partake in three mysterious horror movies on VHS that they stole from their victims.
