This Is the End (2013)

This_Is_The_End

You would think that “This is the End,” a movie about a group of Hollywood actors that basically play themselves for no reason would be self serving and self indulgent. And you’d be correct. Even in its breaking of the fourth wall and satirizing of its stars (that probably only the stars and their friends really would find laugh out loud funny), “This is the End” isn’t a bad movie. In fact for the first forty five minutes, it’s really funny and works as a goofy apocalyptic horror comedy. The rest is just filler, endless montages, and flat improv (mostly from Rogen).

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor-2-The-Dark-World

Thankfully, the follow up to 2011’s adaptation of Marvel’s “Thor” really seems to be intent on fixing the original film’s mistakes. While I really enjoyed the first installment, “Thor: The Dark World” is thankfully more fantasy based, and less a fish out of water action film, this time around. The writers have to work hard to bridge this tale in to the new “Avengers” movie, so we’re left experiencing the fall out from “The Avengers.” After Thor left to fight Loki, Thor has to face Jane who resents him never coming to ensure he was safe, and Loki is viciously angry toward Thor for imprisoning him.

Toy Story of Terror! (2013)

tsot

Disney keep their favorite little toys alive with yet another short adventure, this time in the vein of Halloween. While, it’s not a full length narrative, it does present the same stakes and personal back story that the three feature films have, and is an entertaining look in to the lives of the toys with their new owner Bonnie. After watching a horror movie while on the road with Bonnie, her mom and she stop at a local motel where Mr. Pricklepants is convinced horror awaits them.

Toy Soldiers (1991)

toysoldiersIt’s “Die Hard.” But now it’s set in a private school. And it stars a bunch of child actors now young men that band together to bring down terrorists. You have to love the nineties. Most of it tried to establish its identity, while the rest pretty much cribbed ideas from the eighties. If you can buy that Will Wheaton and Sean Astin are action heroes, “Toy Soldiers” is passable action escapism that mixes “Die Hard” with a touch of “Red Dawn.”

Thinner Blood (2013)

It’s very refreshing when indie filmmakers don’t just seek to create a short film, but a short film that can make a difference. “Thinner Blood” is a remarkable and effecting short drama that could easily be stretched in to a feature film. But on its own it works and stays with you long after the credits have rolled.

Venom: Truth in Journalism (2013)

ryan-kwanten-truth-in-journalism-e1375355228345With “Truth in Journalism” director Joe Lynch proves that he’s not only a wonderful indie filmmaker, but that he knows how to add flavor and originality to a popular property. This time it’s a comic book property, and one that’s been iconic since the late eighties.
